Safety Reminders for Highway Shoulder Scenes
-
Move Over & Slow Down. When you see hazards, responders, or stopped vehicles on the shoulder, change lanes if safe and reduce speed.
-
Pre-dawn/low-light driving. Increase following distance and scan farther ahead—visibility and reaction time are reduced before sunrise.
-
Expect secondary hazards. Debris, tow/recovery activity, and emergency crews may be present near a disabled vehicle.
What To Do After a Serious Interstate Crash (General Steps)
-
Seek medical care immediately and follow your provider’s instructions.
-
Document the scene: photos/video of vehicle positions, skid marks, debris fields, lane lines, and shoulder setups.
-
Capture identifiers: carrier name and USDOT number (if a truck is present), license plates, witness names, and responding agencies.
-
Preserve evidence: save dash-cam files; keep your phone and vehicle EDR/ECM data; don’t repair or discard key items before documenting.
-
Be cautious with insurers: share basic facts until you understand your rights; consider delaying recorded statements if you’re unsure.

FAQs
Does a disabled truck on the shoulder automatically change fault?
No. Investigators consider visibility, placement and timing of warning devices, driver behavior, and roadway conditions.
What if I’m partly at fault?
Kentucky’s comparative-fault rules may still allow recovery, reduced by your share of responsibility.
How soon do I need to act?
Deadlines can be short. Ask about time limits that may apply to your situation.
Should I talk to the other insurer?
Provide basic facts only until you understand your rights. Consider getting guidance before giving a recorded statement.
