Who Can Request a Georgetown Collision Report?

Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Georgetown Accident Report

KSP states that eligible accident reports can be obtained online through BuyCrash:

An eligible requester may also submit a written request for an accident report to the Kentucky State Police Official Custodian of Records.

KSP accepts qualifying written records requests by mail, email, fax, or hand delivery according to its current procedures.

Kentucky’s eligibility restrictions under KRS 189.635 apply to KSP collision reports as well.

What if Police Did Not Investigate the Accident?

Getting a police-written collision report is different from filing a Civilian Collision Report yourself.

Under KRS 189.635, if an accident results in more than $500 in property damage and the collision is not investigated by a law enforcement officer, an involved driver generally must submit a written accident report to the Kentucky State Police within 10 days of the accident.

Do You Need to File a Civilian Report if an Officer Already Made One?

Generally, no.

Kentucky State Police states that if an officer responded and told you that the officer would complete the collision report, you are not required to submit a second civilian report.

KSP advises allowing 10 days for the officer’s report to be completed and made available in its system.

After submitting a civilian collision report online, the system generates a collision report number and gives you an opportunity to download the report for your records.

What Does Kentucky Law Require After a Serious Collision?

Kentucky law also requires immediate notification of law enforcement for certain accidents.

Under KRS 189.635, a driver involved in an accident resulting in:

  • Fatal or nonfatal personal injury, or
  • Vehicle damage that renders a vehicle inoperable

must immediately notify a law enforcement officer with jurisdiction.

The responding officer must investigate the accident and file a written report with the officer’s law enforcement agency.

The law enforcement agency is then required to submit the applicable accident report to the Kentucky State Police reporting system within 10 days after its investigation.
